Ever since I was young, I have planned and dreamed of serving as a
missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This
dream, however, always seemed so far away until just recently. A few
weeks ago I received a package in the mail. Inside this package was my
mission call which would determine where I would be spending the next two years
of my life. As you can guess, I was super excited! I had been
waiting for this day since I was just a little kid and it was finally
here! Since I am from Missouri, I wasn't able to open my mission call
immediately because I wanted my family to be a part of it. I received the
package on Wednesday around 11:00 A.M. but I didn't get to open it until
Thursday at 7:00 P.M. which seemed like an eternity. I had my family,
extended family, and close friends all go to my parent’s home back in
Missouri. We used Skype so they could video chat with me as I opened the
call. Here is what the letter said.
"Dear Elder Vorkink:
You are hereby called to serve as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. You are hereby assigned to labor in the El Salvador
San Salvador Mission. It is anticipated that you will serve for a period
of 24 months."
I will be in the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) for three weeks, and
then I will travel to the Guatemala MTC for six more weeks of training. From
there I will travel south to El Salvador where I will serve the rest of my
mission!
